Celebrity has developed into a
particularly powerful and pervasive trope for contemporary culture (Marshall,
2013). A celebrity is a person who has prominent profile and influence in news
media. Celebrities may be known around the world, so the celebrity culture is a
global phenomenon. Celebrities include those politician, pop stars and film
actors etc. Among media field, these celebrities can make big influences in
shaping the public’s behaviors. Such as when some stars represent
advertisements for the products, people who like the stars may buy the merchandise.
Nowadays, the media becomes broad and the development of globalization is
faster. Global celebrity with those superstars like Madonna, Tom Cruise and Angelina Jolie
etc. has the more impact especially in music and film, not only in America but
also in other countries.
Beside the celebrities in those
western countries, there are also lots of celebrities in Asian countries. A particular
example of a pop music star who called Jay Chou, he is from Taiwan and he is
very famous in China and even in other Asian countries. His music style shapes in many
ways of musical field. Some subsequent and new pop stars like to imitate Jay
Chou’s music style and includes his way of speaking, because he is very humorous.
Jay Chou has the big influence in pop culture, his songs are all make by
himself and young people like listening his songs very much. Many advertiser
like to invite Jay Chou to represent their products, because he has many fans
and big rallying point to attract people among consumer behavior in the
marketing.
Jay Chou puts his efforts in films
in recent years. He performs very well in the film and these films are very
popular and achieve success in screen. Jay Chou is a global celebrity because
he is well known even in Hollywood. He is invited in playing a role in ‘The
Green Hornet’ , in this movie, it enhance the popularity of Jay Chou in an
international platform.

Hi Yue han,
ReplyDeleteThis is a great discussion of 'celebrity' and its global influence in contemporary culture. I liked your use of Marshall's article as a launch pad into your own analysis of celebrity culture.
Jay Chou was a very interesting example because while I have seen 'The Green Hornet' I was not aware of his popularity as a pop music star in China. The example really captures the essence of a global celebrity.
I would have loved to of seen you explore further sources to gain a broader insight into the concept of 'celebrity', further enhancing your discussion.
Overall, a great post and very enjoyable reading. Well done!
Hi Yue Han! Thanks for the interesting post this week and introducing Jay Chou as I was not aware of his popularity!. I agree with you on how globalisation has expanded this idea of celebrity culture and how they have become more influential. When you spoke about Madonna, Tom Cruise and Angelina Jolie I agree on how these celebrities have made an impact in their respected industries but maybe you could've mentioned how they've also made an impact on humanitarian issues around thee world as well as religion such as Scientology. Also in the future just remember to reference the source from where your pictures are from! Overall a very engaging and insightful piece!
ReplyDeleteHey Yue Han! I know Jay Chou so I can say you brought up a good choice of discussion here. About global celebrity I like the fact how you spoke about two different cultures here like Jay Chou he is very popular among asian celebrity, music or filming industry. You also spoke about Tom Cruise and other Hollywood celebrities which set up a certain standard different level among asian celebrity and Hollywood celebrity. But yea because of the globalisation itself either Jay Chou or Tom Cruise they already bring an impact development among globalisation these days.
ReplyDeleteI like how you demonstrated influence of celebrity by using example of well-known stars like Tom Cruise, which people can easily understand for his popularity across countries. I think you did well in using Jay Chou from Asian countries as example to illustrate the celebrity culture. I especially love how you not only focus on his music career which is what he is most popular for, but also discuss film that he participates in. That clearly demonstrated concept of global celebrity. It is good that you provided definition of celebrity and have good discussion, but it would be better if you can back that up with readings.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was great that you used Jay Chou as an example of a global celebrity, and not a traditional pop star or movie star that we are so used to. I had no idea he was a well know pop star, and I haven't seen him in The Green Hornet. I can assume that the strategy would have worked as viewers would be intrigued and do a Google search, and I think like me they would be shocked how big a star he already is in Asia. It seems you have a clear idea of the concept of a global celebrity.
ReplyDeleteHi, Yue Han,
ReplyDeleteWith the trend of globalization, the eastern cultural is diffused all around the world, a lot of Asian celebrities become the well known in western countries. This is a good choice of your celebrity chose, and Jay Chou could be considered as a representative of Asian celebrities. Before this, people in western countries only knew Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee. To sum up, it is a good blog with clear idea.
