Globalization of film industries

Hollywood is a district in Los Angeles, and it is famous for its commercial area and entertainment industry. But now, when people once mention Hollywood, people always think of those American famous films and superstars. Hollywood likes a dream land and it attracts lots of people to join in. In recent times, there are many famous films have been made there, such as Spider-Man, Fast Furious, and Superman etc., these films are very famous and popular even in Asian countries.

Asian market can be seen as a big budget for Hollywood entertainment industry. ‘Hollywood today is fascinated with martial arts, the studios are importing major martial arts stars like Jackie Chan and Jet Li from Hong Kong and putting them in a succession of big budget films’ (Klein, 2004). Hollywood film industry is willing to cooperate with these Asian superstars because this can bring them big profits especially in China market. Recently, a famous Chinese actress BingBing Li joins the film of Resident: Evil 5, and her performance achieves success.

‘A number of factors are driving the Hollywood’s embrace of martial arts genre films, and a growing popular interest in many forms of Asian culture’ (Klein, 2004). Because of the globalization is conducting the development of media, any forms of media including films, literature, music, all of these are spreading in the whole world. The diversity and impact of East and Western culture makes they attract to each other. Thus, through the globalization, it makes the relationship more closely between Hollywood and local Asian film industry. As a result, when Hollywood makes a film, they also consider the element of Asian market, and use some Asian culture in the framework of the film.

In compare of Asian films, the local industries also think of some new ideas to change the stereotype of local films. To consider the globalization of the media, some of the Asian films invite Hollywood superstars to join in to enhance the reputation of the film in international film platforms.

  1. Hi Yuehan,
I enjoyed how you began this post, the opening paragraph really sets up the points you then divulge in to. Starting with most peoples generalised view of Hollywood being all American, is set off nicely against your points on the influence of Asian culture on Hollywood films. I was fascinated about the impact the inclusion of Chinese actress Bing Bing Li had on the success of Resident Evil 5. Your arguments are backed up nicely with the use of Klein’s article. To strengthen your argument you could have incorporated some other sources. Apart from that a great post :) 

  2. Hi Yuehan,

I also enjoyed how you began this post. As a reader it really captured my attention and made me want to read further. One thing that surprised me was the level of importance film makers place on the Asian market when filming, producing and casting a movie. To improve this post you could tidy up some grammatical errors as some sentences were slightly difficult to understand. The use of hyperlinks to external websites could also be used to both greater engage the reader and support your argument.

  3. Hi Yuehan, good post on this week’s topic. I really liked how you opened up the blog, I found the first paragraph to be worded very well, but it would have benefited if you put the year after the movie titles just to reinforce when you said “in recent times”. Paragraphs were well structured, succinct and straight to the point, which made it very easy to read. There are a few grammatical errors but you were able to word what you wanted to say well. The only thing I’d suggest is to put page numbers with a direct quote. Great work

  4. Yue han, your post this week effectively demonstrates your understanding of the concept of Asian influences on US cinema. Your assertion that the Asian market offers Hollywood filmmakers a means to return greater profits through utilising local actors is certainly true. Meanwhile, highlighting the two-way street in which the Asian film industry uses US ideas or actors provides a holistic view to your post. However, your discussion could be strengthened with more specific examples, as well as a discussion on how Chinese actress BingBing Li "achieved success" on Resident Evil 5. Also, be sure to list page numbers for in-text references. Overall, well done.

  5. Hi Yuehan, an interesting post! You showed a good understanding of the ways in which Hollywood is inspired by Asian culture and used the reading well. The way you clearly expressed its connection to globalization in the third paragraph was also done well. I would suggest you be careful in regards to some of your grammar, and ensure you properly reference any images used. Overall, a good effort!

  6. Yue Han, you have demonstrated a good understanding of the concept of Asian influences on Hollywood cinema, as well as providing insight into the interplay between the Asian and Hollywood film industries as commodities that are both aimed at making big profits. All of the elements of the blogging task appear evident in your post; good explanation of the concept, I liked your example and your discussion is well structured with clear paragraph topics. I have not heard/seen the film Residents: Evil 5, therefore perhaps a link to the trailer, or another information source where the reader can find out more about the film would have been beneficial. I think you explain the quotes you have used quite well, demonstrating an ability to critically engage with the scholarly source. It looks like you have done some external research on the topic; however, there is no evidence of this in your blog. You’re argument would have been strengthened with another scholarly source. Great Post, nonetheless.

  7. Hi Yuehan,
Fantastic work this week. Your example of BingBing Li in Resident Evil 5 is a really fitting one and it shows that you understand the concept and readings this week. I have never really thought about how 'Asianized' the Resident Evil film franchise is but after reading your post it is much more obvious. Your third and final paragraph explains and summarizes your post well however grammatically it could be a little tidier. Also make sure to reference your choice of media and add page numbers into your citations. Perhaps a video of BingBing Li's other work in an Asian film could have also provided readers with an idea of the Asian film industry which can then be compared to texts such as Resident Evil. Well done for this week.

  8. Yue han,
The points that you make about the integration of Hollywood and Asian film culture are valid and interesting, but I think there are places where tweaking your writing a little could have made your argument clearer. I liked the dynamic picture that raises questions about gender representation, but noticed that your blog had no links and only one source. Although we’re encouraged to define a concept like ‘Hollywoodisation’, I think you’ve started by defining the actual concept of Hollywood, which probably doesn’t need explaining. The writing style is a little too casual for a scholarly blog and I noticed some repetition. Good effort overall.

  9. Hi,
I enjoyed reading your post this week. I feel that you have covered the content well and made valid points. However, I do feel in some places of the post you may want to revisit and change it, as it got a little bit unclear. In contrast I do feel that you have incorporated the readings well into your post.
You have used good example of Resident Evil, however I have not seen the film, but your blog has made me want to!
I love the image you have used it is very dynamic and took my focus. Maybe next time you could provide some more images or maybe a video to help support your arguments.
Overall, good work and thank you

  10. Hey Yuehan,
Good work this week, your blog was very concise. You clearly show a deep understanding of how Hollywood is influenced by Asian culture. You started off very strong by describing Hollywood thoroughly and you were able to provide a great example of a big budget Hollywood film that features a Chinese actress. For the people (including myself) that have not seen Resident Evil 5 however, it would have been beneficial to include a short scene from the movie that features Bingbing Li, this really would have further supported the points you made. I liked that you stated that through globalisation the Hollywood and Asian film industry have become closer, thus they both consider including elements of each culture into their films to further their success in the box office. Aside from the small grammatical errors this was a very well researched and interesting piece. Well done!
